Padington's knocks competition out of the pan

You can make it five for Padington's Pizza; that's five times in a row as Best Pizza winner in the Best of the Mid-Valley polling.

"That's the best news I've had all day," said Troy Kannier, who owns the Padington's on Commercial Street SE.

"I always am surprised," said his sister Lisa Kannier-Weaver, who co-owns a second location on Pine Street NE with her brother.

This is truly a family affair. Padington's was co-founded by the twins' parents, George and Billie Kannier, in 1978. The North Salem restaurant came first, followed by the South Salem location in 1999.

Billie died nearly six years ago; George died in an auto accident last year, six months before the restaurants won Best Pizza for the fourth time.

The twins credit their parents for setting the standard of service, consistency and quality that has carried Padington's through the years as one of Salem's favorite pizza places.

"I think it's just because we spend so much time down here," Lisa said.

"Troy and I spend seven days a week working."

"Just doing a consistently good job, treating the customer fairly and with respect," is how Troy termed it.

The twins help each other out and echo their father's style, which had the owner busing and wiping tables, making pizza and getting to know the customers.

Both restaurants have a similar Western decor, with stained glass Tiffany-style lamps, old chandeliers, western memorabilia and old-style photos. Billie did the decorating.

Food also matters.

"We try to put out the best pizza we can," Lisa said.

The pizza has a thin crispy crust.

"We have fresh produce delivered every day, we have beef delivered every day," Lisa said.

No artificial ingredients are used, cheese included.

At both restaurants, the most popular pizza is the Humdinger. A large Humdinger offers a bounty of salami, pepperoni, mushrooms, olives and beef.

Popular with cheese lovers is Deputy's Delight, which comes with sun-dried tomatoes, fresh mushrooms, olive oil and a "special" cheese blend on top, in addition to the regular mozzarella cheese.

Salads are on the menu as well at Padington's.
